Robocop

Set in futuristic Detroit where crime and poverty run rampant. Much like modern day Detroit. The cops are under funded and overworked. Much like modern Detroit. Maybe they had a psychic writing the script in the eighties.
The movie Robocop has gained cult classic and eighties-tastic status in many people's minds. Set in a city falling to crime a cop is killed in the line of duty. His body is then used as the base for a cybernetic super cop that will hopefully stop all crime. When the main villain sends a glitch prone robot after him not only does Robocop win but he also kills the evil military corporate honcho in true over the top 1980s fashion.
What does that have to do with local history? Simple the city of Detroit is building a giant statue in said fictional character's likeness.

Starting out with one person's tweet about how Robocop would be a kickass ambassador for Detroit it went viral on Facebook.
After that things just started falling into place. Brandon Walley, director of development at the nonprofit Imagination Stations, was a Robocop fan and got a few of his coworkers hooked onto the idea. They put up a kickstarter page and reached the goal on the fourth day.
Entrepreneur Peter Hottelet runs a company that makes products based on movies and he got in contact with the team. Having already done this before he got them in touch with MGM who owned the rights to Robocop. A 1:1 scale was sent to the studio and it was then blown up to ten feet tall. The final product is going to be done in bronze. They are trying to keep as much of the work needed to complete it in Detroit.
It was scheduled to be released in June but has since been delayed. There is no news yet as to when it will be released but is still going to happen.
