So I really enjoyed Jonathan’s story telling in class about how many top tear athletes come out of Dayton, and it didn’t really hit home that this number is under appreciated until I was sitting around talking with friends this past weekend. One of my friends made a comment that we don’t have that many elite athletic talent from Ohio anymore. And to that, a few others and I said; false. While there was the expected conversation about football and basketball stars playing at the colligate level, I was interested by a comment about how elite the Miami Valley is in producing wrestlers.

I had never given it much thought, but looking further into the topic it was evident that if you want to wrestle in the big leagues, more than likely, you’re from the Midwest. Additionally, there is a large majority of wrestlers coming from Ohio, and even the Dayton area. So I took a look at the best of the best in High School wrestling. I went to flowrestling.com (all things wrestling), and took a look at the final results for the Iron Man tournament. This is where the best of the best complete at the High School level. I was shocked to see the over whelming number of kids from Ohio. These athletes are the best in the country, and Ohio is leading the numbers bar none. Additionally, out of the pool of Ohio competitors, a number of these wrestlers are coming out of Miami Valley schools.

Here is the proof that Miami Valley really is producing top athletes on all different platforms of sports. I was shocked to learn about the reputations of these local programs, when I asked a friend that had wrestled collegiately in Ohio where some of these best programs are. It didn’t take long for him to name the Dayton area. Hopefully this is a legacy and tradition that will continue in the Miami valley area. I think that a lot of times, wrestling may be under appreciated. However, in the wrestling community, Dayton is very much on the map.
