Only in a local history class can I talk about Roger Troutman...its a beautiful thing. All jokes aside I know here at WSU in the archives there is a collection centered around Dayton and the city's contribution to funk music specifically (1970's). Although Roger and his group Zapp reached the height of their popularity in the 80's you would be hard pressed to find a muscial act more widely associated with Dayton besides Roger Troutman and Zapp. I have pretty much tuned out r&b and hip hop in recent months for my own reasons but before that time it was evident his influence was still resonating with a younger generation of musicians and entertainers. His use of the synthesizer/voice box to not only alter his voice but create melodies as well has been copied (to varying degrees of success) by many mainstream and underground acts alike. His musical accomplishments have been and should continue to be a source of pride for Dayton in the years to come.
