Wait, there's a museum in Canal Winchester?

Yes! Have you ever heard of Bob McDorman? How about Corvettes? How about Bob McDorman's "Corvettes on the Canal"? Well, the dealership owner and car lover has built and just opened a museum in Canal Winchester, Ohio. It is filled with classic cars and automobile memorabilia, some owned by Mr. McDorman and some loaned to the museum by community members.
McDorman was born 1932 in Xenia, Ohio. He grew and worked on his family farm, but he always was fascinated by cars and how they worked. He worked at his father's International Harvester dealership as a parts manager and eventually joined a Buick-Pontiac-GMC dealership in London, OH. He worked his way up the chain to Body Shop manager and then transferred to a Chevrolet-Oldsmobile-Cadillac dealership. It was there he fell in love with Corvettes. McDorman purchased his dealership in 1956 with the intent of promoting and selling the Corvettes he was so passionate about. He turned it into one of the top dealerships in the country. He began an annual Corvette show, hosted by his dealership, known as "Corvettes on the Canal" in Canal Winchester, Ohio. He would attract visitors with classic and current Corvettes as well as providing his own with histories on each of them. In 1976, he began the tradition of giving away a brand new Corvette to the Best in Show winners. He would donate $5,000 dollars from the sales and proceeds to the Children's Hospital in Columbus. He collects the cars as well and sells them in large collections only to begin hunting for new ones.
Recently, Mr. McDorman has opened an automotive museum in Canal Winchester. He has collected cars from community members as well as displaying purchases from his own extensive collections. The cars are rotated on a seasonal basis and are displayed amongst automotive paraphernalia such as a large collection of neon lights, signs, and trophies. He was recently entered into the Corvette Hall of Fame in 2012.
Check out their website! He has a great deal of information on the cars and exhibits there, along with a video about the collection. It's a great way to learn about the museum before driving down to visit!
