Old Home Building and Louis Sullivan

In downtown Newark, Ohio, on the corner of W. Main and Third, there stands a building designed by the famous architect Louis Sullivan. Sullivan was an architect from Chicago. He designed a number of "jewel box" banks, which is how people described them. This was because they tended to be boxy in nature, but also quite ornate in design. According to the Columbus Dispatch, he built a total of 8 of these style banks, one of which is located in Newark. It has been listed on the National Register for Historic Places since the 1970s.

I've been in the building once, a long time ago, when I was going with my teacher and a few other students to a Spelling Bee. There used to be an ice cream shop there in the first floor.

The building was built between 1914 and 1915. Other than being utilized for a bank, the building has also been an ice cream shop, a jewelry store and even a butchery and meat market. Recently, a man originally from Newark (who graduated from my high school) purchased the property and has been working to fix it up. Only a few years ago he put it back on the market again, hoping that someone would purchase the building and put it to good use. He is really hoping to find the right buyer or leaser who will finish the restoration that he himself has started.

According to the Dispatch, he says, "I’m really just a guy that’s trying to see it restored."
