For this first weeks blog post I wanted to write about the recent media attention covering the Wal-Mart shooting in Beavercreek. This is a local event that has taken place in our community but has also had a larger effect on people outside of the Miami Valley. Since the fatal shooting of a local man, there has been protests and national attention directed toward the Dayton area. Dayton Daily news has even reported that the national civil rights figure Reverend Al Sharpton plans to visit the Dayton area the bring awareness to the incident. This group hopes to build support for the release of video footage of the shooting. This shooting is reminiscent of similar police shooting events that have taken place across the United States. Any precedents set in this case will serve as an example in future police shootings. It is clear that this event is important on a much larger scale than just Dayton, and supports the argument of local history importance. Unfortunately there have been protesters urging the investigation of police brutality. If the officers involved in this particular case are charged with a lawsuit involving brutality or civil rights, I would expect much more national attention in the Dayton area.
Below I have included a link to the Dayton Daily News website with more information on the topic.
